Daguerrotype - The first photographic process to create a permanent image, completed in 1837 by the Frenchman Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre. Daguerre was a partner of Nicephore Niepce, who took the world's first successful photograph in 1826, but discovered the secret of fixing images (with a salt solution) only after Niepce's death.
